The simple truth is that you can’t always expect to have rosy times at work. There will definitely be ups and downs, and there will always be criticisms here and there from your boss or colleagues. It is a known fact that many people do not know how to handle criticisms. They end up fighting back with loud voices or trading angry words. Similarly, introverts crawl into their shells and never try to over-do or do beyond their routine duties when they are criticized. When you cannot handle criticism at work, you will feel frustrated. When it comes to criticisms, there is a great need for diplomacy and tact. You need to be tactful and see beyond the criticism and glean into the message being passed. Only then will you be able to deal with criticism without getting hurt.
Sometimes, criticisms are thrown at you to access your strength and weakness. You may be criticized to get to know that side of you that your curriculum vitae couldn’t bring out. You need to be calm about it, process all that has been said, take out the constructive part and begin to employ in your work. The way you handle criticisms says a lot about you. It shows whether you can be calm enough to listen to negative things said about your work, and you can still go ahead, learn and make changes. The way you reach exposes your true self. If you go all defensive, you will get your fingers burnt.
Are you a patient person?
You see, you will never learn patience at work by being a patient person. The route to learning patience is by surviving under a very difficult boss or even having difficult and highly critical people work with you. You need to bring in a whole lot of tact when handling criticisms to show that you have the ability to be patient and not throw in the towel at the slightest provocation. The people who make it to the top are those who didn’t give up, but stayed till the end, enduring all the difficulties and even acerbic tongues of their work partners and bosses.
Are you a team player?
If your work is criticized, the truth is that it doesn’t bring a nice feeling. However, it is important to know that you are not the only one on the team and you need to be a team player. You need to make an adjustment and correct your mistakes. Don’t over-react to criticisms, don’t sulk or display some bitterness, this will show that you don’t value the work of your team. This also means that you are too selfish to put your feelings aside; thus, affecting the whole team.
Always learn from criticisms
Nothing is entirely useless. There is always something to learn from everything. Even a dead clock is always correct twice a day. This is one major reason tact is really important in handling criticisms. There are lessons that can be learned from the barrage of words that hit your work. It is important that you take everything, not with a pinch of salt, but with seriousness. Sift through it, take out the constructive part and use it for your betterment.
Challenge some criticisms
Not all criticisms are right, actually. Many-a-times, our bosses or even work colleagues may criticize our work wrongly; therefore, you need to challenge them. But how do challenge such criticism or even defend yourself properly? They may not understand your points of view and criticize you based on that, so you may need to point out that they are wrong. However, you need to handle this tactfully, measure and analyze what has been said and process it rightly; then, you can defend your case.
Identify the characteristics of the stakeholders
At every workplace, there are stakeholders – the key people who manages the company one way or the other. As an employee, you need to understand the art of managing stakeholders. Everyone, from your boss, colleagues to the low-level staff and every other person around you, contribute to your success or failure in your workplace. You can only manage your stakeholders when you have known how they act and react to issues. Handling criticisms with tact will make you identify the stakeholders in your workplace that are prone to criticize, complain or just make your life a living hell. This knowledge alone will help identify them and give your ideas on how to relate to them.
