For many of us living here in the United States, the summer kicked off after Memorial Day a few weeks ago. For a lot of kids, the moment school was out their summer began the moment that bell rang. Some people won’t even consider it the summer until they get to their summer homes neatly tucked away beside idyllic lakes or by the breeze of the sea.
For the science geek in us and for our planet though summer began 2 days ago on Monday, the 20th of June. What’s so special about that day? This day marks the summer solstice or the longest day in the year. For us who live in the temperate zone of the world, this marks the official start of summer. In New York City for instance, the day lasted a full 15 hours and 50 minutes last Monday as the sun seemingly stood still and beamed down its warmth on us mere mortals.
Whether we marked the start of summer a few weeks ago or a few days ago one thing is for sure, the heat is about to rain down on us big time. Temperatures have already started to soar in the 90s in New York City and desert areas have reported scorching hot mercury levels in the 120s! The heat isn’t that bad though especially if you have the right ways to keep cool amid this season. Here are a few ideas to keep you cool in your daily grind.
Make some cold brew coffee
If you’re the kind of person who needs some perking up in the morning and just needs caffeine flowing through your system then try substituting your regular cup of piping hot Joe with a cup of cold brew coffee. Cold brew is a stronger blend of coffee that is much smoother than the normal drip or press brewing met
hod and takes about 12 hours to prepare and brew. The reason for its strength is so you can put ice into your brew and not lose any of its potency due to the ice melting. The result on a hot day is perfect, getting your caffeine fix and an ice cold drink at the same time.
Whip up some refreshing recipes
Why just stop at coffee as far as the season goes? Try to bring some refreshing ingredients that is guaranteed to make your summer even more pleasant. For starters and salads try putting together something with refreshing citrus fruits in it or mix up some greens with components that naturally refresh like cucumbers and watermelon. For the main course some lemon barbecue chicken or orange lean pork provides that low-fat option that won’t heat up your body while digesting. Then there’s heavenly dessert where the real cool recipes can come out like refrigerated cakes, homemade popsicles or how about that key lime pie?
Do Your Workout at the Pool
Here’s another neat trick that will get your workout fix going without the bearing the brunt of the excessive summer heat. How about burning calories at the nearby lap pool. Swimming has several benefits to it that include balanced focus on muscle strength along with the aerobic value that keeps your heart in great condition. Being immersed in water also naturally cools down your body temperature and helps you avoid serious issues that running outdoors or hiking may bring you like dehydration or sunburn.
Don’t wear outfits that make you look cool but actually cause more heat on your body. Try wearing apparel that literally is cool and helps your body breathe. Cotton is a great option not only because it’s soft to the skin but because of its capability to allow more air into it and it allows moisture to evaporate easier. Try investing in shirts that are made from microfiber polyester and allow a massive amount of cooling and sweat absorption on them. Brands like Nike’s Dri-Fit or Adidas’ Climacool are examples of these shirts that are used heavily on golf courses to deal with situations like excessive heat.
Family Activities at Cool Places
If a trip to the beach or a nearby watering hole is miles away and takes a ton to prepare why not take the family out on some activities in places that have AC. This could be the perfect time to convince the kids to visit the nearby museum or art gallery where they can learn a lot about culture while getting out of the heat. A movie is always an excellent choice with most blockbusters coming out during the summer. There’s also the option of going to the nearby mall just make sure to get a lot of walking done so you can exercise and still feel cool at the same time.
Like I said earlier, these are some quick and easy suggestions to bear the summer heat. Watch out for some recipes on great summer food and a step-by-step guide to making a nice cold-brew in future articles.
