Honesty has always been a good policy. We grew up hearing this statement and it has been impressed in our hearts. However, this question baffles most people – can being honest have a negative impact on one’s life? Does it always pay to be honest at all times? Let’s take a close look at this issue;
One thing you need to understand is that there are people who are honest or who live and practice honesty every day of their lives. Whereas, there are other people who are just looking for the honest ones to manipulate. This manipulative set of people defends their behaviors with the realist ideology. They claim that the world is a struggle and only the smartest can survive. They claim that the world is a struggle and only the smartest can survive in it. Hence, there is a need to watch out for yourself, and yourself only. So, as they struggle to succeed in life, they indulge in several manipulation strategies if the situation requires it. Let’s look at how being honest can have a negative impact on your life:
Being taken for granted
People will take you for granted, ride on you and will not apologize for it. There are people who are prepared to lie or bend the truth a little to suit them. They won’t hesitate to make you a victim for their scheming minds, especially since they know that you won’t want to hit below the belt just like them. The negative impact it has on your life is that it portrays you to be a weakling. You’re seen as someone who can’t fight back, as someone who will refuse to get dirty and messy in a fight. Once this reputation sticks to you, it becomes difficult to remove it. People will now see you as one they can easily take for granted.
How about vulnerability? Honesty makes you vulnerable. There are situations where it is better to keep your dirty linen secrets than to come wash them in public. A good example is if you have a really bad habit; you might actually want to work on that habit, while keeping it a secret than for you to tell someone you’re in a relationship with, hoping that your partner will understand. Sometimes, what you reveal to your partner might just be the irritating factor that drives a wedge between you two.
Search for idealistic paradigms
When searching for idealism, being honest can have a negative impact on your life is the search for idealism. Like we pointed out earlier in this article, the world is run on realism. Realism is a ‘take care of yourself first’ system, where people look out for their own good. Even countries practice realism in the international system of politics. They look out for their own interests. On the other hand, idealism is about beliefs that it is possible to live according to very high standards of behavior and honesty. Throw honesty into the mix and you will have people who carry these idealistic beliefs. Unfortunately, we live in a world that is realistic in nature. Carrying idealistic beliefs will only serve to make you yearn for ideas that cannot be materialized. Hence, there will always be a dissatisfaction in your heart, as you’ll always feel cheated, taken for granted and will never be able to understand how to compete in a world as ruthless as ours.
